The best hiking routes in Sardinia
Although the moment that we are all living prevents us from going out to cultivate our passion for the outdoors, we want to look to the future with hope. Sooner or later, we will return to normal, stronger than before!
Therefore, after a few months of absence, the outdoor section returns with the selection of the most beautiful trekking in each Italian region. We are finally in Sardinia: the last region that we lacked in our tracking shot. Once again we cannot fail to remind you to take Bivo with you on your excursions. Bivo is the ideal food for those who love outdoor life because during your treks it gives you the opportunity to feed and re-hydrate at the same time.
In addition, putting an envelope in your backpack can really come in handy if you plan to eat in a refuge, then find it closed or in those situations where your walk lasts longer than expected and you need an extra dose of energy.
The Sinis Peninsula
The Sinis Peninsula is a unique land tongue in the western part of Sardinia. The path that we propose to discover this land begins and ends of the Seu House in the Seu Municipal Park. From here you follow a dirt road and then a direct road to the sea from which a walk along the cliff begins. Continuing along the coast you arrive at the Turr’E Seu keep. Our path with the blue sea as its protagonist leads us after a long stretch of cliff to the Maimoni beach formed by tiny white quartz spheres. Subsequently, cutting inland, the sand dunes are abandoned in favor of the Mediterranean scrub in search of the footsteps of terrestrial turtles. Once you reach the dirt road again, lined with dwarf palms and Aleppo pines, you return to the starting point.
Barumini: from Tuili to the Giara plateau
The Giara Plateau in Sardinia is located in the provinces of Cagliari and Nuoro in the center of the island and, due to its unique characteristics, it is difficult for humans to reach. For this reason, nature has been able to develop in an undisturbed way, creating a unique environment of its kind: completely separate from the surrounding area.
The route that we propose starts and ends in Tuili and through the streets of the city center leads to the Giara Park. After passing a few bridges, you reach the “bia de Carros” or the path that wagons used to climb the plateau. The route continues on dirt paths to be followed between the temporary lakes typical of the area and the “pinnettas”, the typical shepherds’ huts. In this area it is not uncommon to come across wild horses. On the way back you will also be able to see the Tutturuddu nuraghe, one of the 23 nuraghi on the plateau.
Note the Giara Morisia botanical garden, where the botanical species present on the plateau are cataloged.
The Supramonte
If you are looking for an adventure that will lead you in a wild and uncontaminated environment in which you almost have the impression of being the first explorers, the Supramonte is for you.
Supramonte is the largest massif in Sardinia, the cradle of very important karst gorges. In this area there is also the Nuragic Village of Tiscali.
The best known itineraries to discover this area are two: the Selvaggio Blu, lasting 7 demanding days, and the Great Crossing of the Supramonte, which instead lasts 4 stages certainly of the lowest level of difficulty.
If, on the other hand, you have a few days at your disposal, we advise you to choose only one stage, the one that from Pradu leads to Su Gologone. Thanks to this itinerary you will get to know Supramonte, the mountainous complex that occupies the central-eastern part of Sardinia and its limestone walls. In this context, the erosive action of rivers has generated truly unique gorges and chasms and a network of karst aquifers. It is a unique scenario of its kind that will leave you spellbound.
Su Sercone
Su Sercone is the largest karst sinkhole in Europe with its 500 meters in diameter and 200 meters in depth, a true natural monument of the island. It is located in the center of Supramonte and can be reached with various itineraries. What we propose is a long ring (about 7 hours of travel) with a significant difference in altitude that begins and ends in Valle di Lanaittu. This is a really demanding itinerary that will allow you to appreciate the unique characteristics of Su Sercone as well as unspoiled and wild nature.
The south of the island
The path that goes from Torre di Solanas to Castidias is a long route on a ridge on top of the mountain uninterrupted for kilometers. It is a 9 hour route that will allow you to have a 360 degree view inside one of the fascinating Sardinian canyons.
It is a complex itinerary as the paths are sometimes immersed in vegetation and difficult to find but the panorama that this path offers repays all efforts.
The green train
Sardinia is crossed by various different lines of the Trenino Verde which take advantage of the old rails with little reduction and the means of another era.
The path that we propose is that of the Laboratory of Walking Ancient Paths: an itinerary on the Heels of Ogliastra, of the Mesozoic limestone heels among enchanting holm oaks.
The route lasts 5 hours and starts from the station of San Gerolamo in Niala on the Mandas-Arbatax line. From the stop, follow the signs for Niala and then the Rio Su Tuvu Nieddu. From here you come to a natural bridge carved into the rock: truly unique. Then following the Rio Donna Pruna you can appreciate the limestone boulders, the travertine flows and several waterfalls. Continuing on the path, at times challenging, you reach the remains of a nuragic village.
A marine trekking
But in Sardinia it is really difficult to resist the blue sea. Our final proposal of this long trip to outdoor Italy is different from all the others: a sea kayak trekking. Even in this situation, however, Bivo can be useful for its ease of use and transport. The departure of the last route we propose is in Alghero and the arrival in Porto Farro. It is 60 kilometers to go paddling for 3 days discovering the Coral Riviera immersed in the Protected Area of the Porto Conte Park.
The first stage begins with a paddle in the bay of Alghero and continues up to the Lazzaretto beach and then to the Bombarde beach. Finally you reach Punta Negra. From here we start again for the second stage totally included in the Marine Protected Area where you will have the opportunity to rediscover your eyes with the Cala dell ‘Olanda, Capo Galera, Punta Giglio. Reached the beach of Tramariglio we recommend taking two steps to the Ancient Spanish Tower. Taking the kayaks, continue until you reach the Bay of Nymphs and the adjacent Roman ruins. The second stage ends at Mugoni beach. In the third stage we continue to go up north touching first the Cala Dragunara, then the very high cliff of Capo Caccia and finally the Foradada Island and Cala d’Inferno. The end of our marine trekking is at the bay of Porto Ferro, perhaps with an incredible sunset after 60 kilometers spent in the blue that only the Sardinian sea gives.
